The restaurant was begun by Duminda Matarage in the late 1990s; part of the magic of this unique beach spot, is that it has remained as small, family run business. This adds to the laid back, friendly and atmospheric feel. The name was coined, as originally mangrove trees grew at the far end of the beach, close to the Buddhist temple, and these would attract kingfisher birds.
